Nsumbu National Park (Zambia)
A little-known park in the northeast corner of Zambia, Nsumbu was subject to prolific poaching in the 1990s and early 2000s. However, much of the wildlife habitat in the park remains intact, and it is ripe for repopulation under the management of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. The Wyss Foundation provided Frankfurt Zoological Society with a $500,000 grant in 2019 to secure the park’s remnant elephant population from the poaching threat. This grant assisted in the re-engagement of surrounding communities with the economic benefits offered by the park’s natural resources through non-consumptive and sustainable uses.
The Foundation continues to support Nsumbu, paving the way for wildlife reintroductions that will further benefit the local economy through restoration of the Nsumbu ecosystem and an increasingly robust tourism offering. Frankfurt Zoological Society hopes that lions and rhinos will once again roam the park in the near future.
