Carpathia Mountains (Romania)
The Wyss Foundation has provided over $30 million in grants to Fundatia Conservation Carpathia to support the organization’s acquisition of lands for a new wilderness reserve in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. Known as the ‘Wild Heart of Europe,’ the Carpathian Mountains are one of the few places left in Europe where much of the continent’s native flora and fauna can be viewed in a wild setting, including brown bears, wolves, and red deer. The Wyss Foundation has been a long-time supporter of this critically important protection and restoration project.
As of June 2022, this effort continues to gain support from around Europe, and indeed the world. The Wyss Foundation’s philanthropy has supported Fundatia Conservation Carpathia to purchase and protect more than 44,000 acres of habitat within this landscape.
