Traslasierra National Park and National Reserve (Argentina)
In March 2018, Argentina’s national government passed legislation formally establishing the Traslasierra National Park and National Reserve on the Estancia las Pinas property in Argentina’s Córdoba Province, providing permanent protection for the entire 260,000 acre property. Long targeted by Argentina’s conservation community for protection, the area provides a rare, incredibly pristine example of the critically endangered Chaco Seco (Dry Chaco) ecosystem. Together with its wetter cousin, the Chaco Húmedo (Humid Chaco), the combined “Gran Chaco Ecosystem” once spanned nearly the entire northern one-third of Argentina but has been reduced to less than a quarter of its original size due to land conversions. In addition to its ecological importance, the park also protects significant archeological and historical values.
As funds are raised, portions of the National Reserve are upgraded to National Park status. The Wyss Foundation’s support of $4,000,000 to Aves Argentinas was instrumental in completing the 260,000-acre Traslasierra National Park and National Reserve project.
